Buyers guide to laptops

Buying a new laptop/notebook is a big decision.  Whether you’re a first timer or experienced user the choice is vast. 

The first thing to decide is what do you want to do and why do you need this type of computer also battery life may be a consideration.

 · For word processing or internet use a good second user or new entry level laptop/notebook is sufficient.

· For digital work, picture editing or watching DVD’s use a medium level laptop/notebook.  Games may require a high specification machine with plenty of memory and a high specification graphics card.

You will only get what you pay for.  In most cases the more you pay the more you can do.  With second user laptops/notebooks the most important item to check is the battery.  If the battery is worn out it is no longer portable and may defeat the object.  New batteries can cost between £50 and £100+.  Also check the screen is bright and clear.

The reason Laptops are now called Notebooks is because many newer Notebooks have ventilation slots underneath.  These should not be blocked so you should use them on a hard surface such as padded TV dinner type tray.
